Wentworth had its most successful schools sailing regatta last week. We had 9 Students entered across 4 different fleets and we won one of the fleets and placed very well in the others. All the sailors tried hard and learnt a lot. Conditions on the first day were windy and tested our newer sailors with the experienced sailors enjoying the thrills of sailing fast. The second day was light and quite hard work for the windsurfers.
Ben Mackay is the Auckland Secondary Schools Champion in the Techno Board. Picture above shows Ben planning on his Techno board and Picture below shows Ben about to round the wing mark with his brother Sam in the Opti just ahead. Ben had to win every race on the last day to win by one point.
Daniel Jones was second in the Laser 4.7 Picture below shows Daniel (black T-shirt) on the beach on the second day before racing started
Robert Pasco was third in the Laser 4.7s. Claudia Mesaric was fourth in the laser 4.7s and First Girl. Picture below shows Robert & Claudia prior to a start on day 2. Robert is 184690 & Claudia is the light blue hulled Laser 4.7
Sam Mackay was 16th in a very competitive Optimist fleet that included world #6 Marcus Hansen and other Members of the 3D Print NZ Optimist Team. Photo below shows Sam near the lead (4134), Please note Optimist sailors how the leaders have their boats healed over further than Sam.
Matthew Hughes was 21st in his first Optimist open fleet regatta. Picture below shows Mathew working hard
Ashton Wilson was 25th in his first ever regatta. Ashton's boat is shown below. Sorry we couldn't get a better picture of you Ashton. You'll need to talk to your Mum about that!
Jak Charles & Oliver Down struggled in the windy conditions and decide to withdraw from the regatta. Although they did complete one race and were not last, which was a great achievement.
The formula to find the best school overall was changed this year which worked against Wentworth as under old formula that had been used for the previous 50 or so years we would have won or been a close second. Previously they took your best 3 results across 3 fleets and then you next best result from any fleet to give your total score. The school with the lowest score winning. With our 1st 2nd & 3rd and Sam’s 16th we would have done very well. Next year hopefully we will have even more sailors! Thanks again to all the parents who took time off work to attend over the 2 days.
